Wednesday:
Wengen to Lauterbrunnen (train CC63 15 minute ride, leaves every 30 minutes CHF 3.60/person)
Hike from Lauterbrunnen Bahnhofplatz to Stechelberg is 3.48 miles 325 feet of elevation gain.
Hike from Lauterbrunnen to Stechelberg to Gimmelwald is 6.5 miles, ~2500 ft gain.
Hike from Lauterbrunnen to Stechelberg to Trachsellauenen to Gimmelwald 17.0 km is 10.56 miles with 1149m = 3769ft in elevation change. . Ryder-Walker also talks about Hotel Obersteinberg. This view looks amazing but adds 3 miles and 1500 feet of elevation, so we'd be talking about 13.5 miles. Ridiculous.
There is a lift near Stechelberg to Gimmelwald and then to Mürren and Birg and Schilthorn.
Ryder-Walker says: Lauterbrunnen past Staudachfalle toward Stechelberg to Weisse Lutschine (which is the river) to Trachsellauenen where they recommended lunch in 2009. Reviews for lunch were good. Must pay in cash. The views at Trachsellauenen on Google Earth don't look great. Hike to Trachsellauenen from Stechelberg is 2.1 miles each way with 1000ft of gain/loss. Adding 4 miles to do Trachsellauenen when we are already doing 6.5 miles doesn't sound like a good idea. This is a map of the trail (Gimmelwald-Lauterbrunnen) done the reverse direction, but it has a huge climb and drop in the middle of the Lauterbrunnen valley which clearly is not really there, so the elevation gain/loss may be wrong https://www.alltrails.com/explore/trail/switzerland/bern/gimmelwald-lauterbrunnen?u=i
Are there places to eat in Stechelberg, so we can eat there instead of Trachsellauenen? It might be worth saving the time so that we can take the lift to Birg and see the views from there. Hotel Restaurant Stechelberg is a bed and breakfast. Marlen's Snack is a food truck is a 1h (5km) walk from the Lauterbrunnen train station (bahnhofplatz).
schinken = ham
bahnhof = railroad station
bahnhofplatz = station square

Gimmelwald (Schilthornbahn) to Mürren (Schilthornbahn) (cable car CHF 3.20/person)
The day was cloudy with periods of rain, so going up to Birg probable would have been a waste. we took a bus from Lauterbrunnen to Trummelbach, then hiked about 2.7 miles mostly flat to the Schilthornbahn. We were worried that the bahn wasn't running, but then realized what we were seeing was the new lift under construction and the old lift was running just around the bend where it wasn't as visible. In Murren we had lunch at Drei Berge and my daughter at Liv. It started raining shortly after we got to the restaurant, and it isn't like in the US where they expect to turn over the tables quickly so we stayed for about 2 hours, relaxing with good beer. There were always empty tables, so we were sure we weren't causing them lose money by lingering. There were a families who brough their dogs into the restaurant with them as we had seen at many places in Switzerland. My husband and son each got bratwurst which came with the most amazing French fries. I had cacio e pepe which was just ok. After the rain cleared we took the Allmend funicular up to Allmendhubel and got some pictures of the awesome views. The Eiger Hotel is the only hotel we stayed which did not have a good view, but we didn't mind. Dinner the Eiger for "half-board" was only two choices. The vegetarian choice was pesto pasta which was pretty flavorless, and the non-vegetarian choice was a meat stew. The following night the choices were raclette or lamb, so we decided to go Tham, the Chinese restaurant in town which had some of the best Chinese food I have had in a long time. The breakfast at the hotel was great.
